Last weekend, I was catching up on Grey’s Anatomy. I have watched every episode of Seasons 1 to 19 but only just started Season 20!  I love binge-watching a show on my ipad while my husband is watching the AFL…he can enjoy his thing and I can get my dose of drama mixed with life lessons. Well, in Season 20, there was an episode that really hit home. Dr. Owen Hunt, one of the show’s seasoned trauma surgeons, came up with an idea while on a hike with his wife on their day off.  It was a simple idea but I think it was brilliant: teaching ordinary people basic trauma medical skills online.

His plan was born out of the experience of having to talk someone through saving her father with her hiking shirt and a stick that was in the whole they were caught in.

After they came back to the hospital in an ambulance having rescued the man and his daughter, he thought, “What if someone is stuck somewhere, like on a hike, and needs to temporarily fix a gaping, blood gushing wound until they can get to a hospital?” While CPR courses are widely available, there’s a whole world of practical, life-saving knowledge that most people don’t have access to. And in today’s world, where we’re more connected than ever, this kind of education can be made available to anyone, anywhere.

Why shouldn’t more of us with specialised knowledge and skills take that leap to teach others, no matter where they are in the world? Whether you’re a trauma surgeon, a seasoned consultant, or someone who’s spent years mastering a particular craft, there’s a demand for what you know. And the best part? You don’t need to hop on a plane or navigate hectic travel schedules to share it.

The Power of Online Learning

We live in an age where you can teach and learn just about anything online. The beauty of this is that you can reach people who might never have had access to this information otherwise. Picture this: someone in a remote area, miles away from the nearest medical facility, could learn from your expertise. They could watch a video, read a guide, or take an interactive course that you created, and potentially save a life. That is so powerful!.

And it’s not just for doctors and medical professionals sharing their life-saving skills. Maybe you’re a business consultant who’s helped companies grow and thrive. Or perhaps you’ve developed a knack for creative problem-solving in your industry. The point is, there’s someone out there who needs what you know—and you can reach them without ever leaving your home office.

Making a Difference Without the Travel

At JVB Connect, I’ve always believed in the power of leveraging our unique skills and experiences to help others. It’s why I started this journey in the first place. But what’s exciting to me is how the landscape of learning has shifted. We’re no longer limited by geography. If you have the knowledge and the drive to make an impact, you can reach people all over the world, without the need for constant travel.

Creating online courses or programmes isn’t just about sharing information—it’s about empowering others. It’s about giving people the tools they need to thrive, whether they’re managing a team, starting a business, or, like in Owen Hunt’s case, saving a life in an emergency.

So, What’s Stopping You?

If you’ve been on the fence about sharing your expertise with a wider audience, consider this your sign. The world needs what you have to offer, and with the right tools and guidance, you can turn your knowledge into an accessible, impactful resource.

At JVB Connect, I help professionals like you take that step—whether it’s setting up an online course, creating a comprehensive digital programme , or optimising your online presence so that the right people can find you. There’s never been a better time to start. And who knows? The skills you share might just change someone’s life.
